About This Location

Hand of Gul’dan is the volcanic formation in central Shadowmoon Valley, southeast of the Altar of Damnation. Enraged Fire Spirits roam the lava fields on the west side of the Hand of Gul’dan in a wide open area with minimal competing mob types. The Fire Spirits are spread along the land with almost no other mobs in between them, making for clean isolated pulls with no risk of accidental aggro from mixed mob types.

The location sits naturally on the Shadowmoon Valley leveling path and is accessible at ground level without a flying mount — an important distinction from the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand which requires flying for equivalent Fire farming.

Mobs

  • Enraged Fire Spirit — fire elemental, level 67-69. The sole target at this location. Casts Fel Fireball which inflicts fire damage and can Enrage — increasing physical damage and attack speed for 2 minutes. Interrupt Fel Fireball immediately on every pull. Burst the mob down quickly once it Enrages to minimise sustained damage intake.

Mob characteristics: elemental fire type, level 67–69, medium HP pool. Wide spawn spacing means pulls are consistently isolated with low risk of chain aggro. No dangerous crowd control abilities.

Estimated XP per Hour

  • Estimated XP/hour: 65,000 – 80,000
  • Based on approximately 535 XP per mob at level 67-69
  • Realistic solo kill rate: approximately 2 mobs per minute due to wide mob spacing
  • No rested XP, AoE pulls, or group modifiers included

XP/hour sits at the lower end for Shadowmoon Valley spots due to the wide spread of mobs reducing pull density. The open layout with minimal competing mobs makes it easy to farm uninterrupted — what it loses in density it gains in clean consistent pulls with no downtime from accidental aggro.

Estimated Gold per Hour

Gold income at Hand of Gul’dan comes primarily from:

  • Motes of Fire — approximately 34-35% drop rate per Enraged Fire Spirit kill
  • Vendor trash — minimal elemental drops beyond Motes
  • Occasional green item drops

Estimated gold/hour: 70 – 95g. The approximately 34.9% Mote of Fire drop rate makes this one of the stronger ground-accessible Primal Fire spots in Shadowmoon Valley. Primal Fire is consistently one of the highest demand Primals throughout TBC due to its use in over 80 profession recipes across Blacksmithing, Enchanting, and Alchemy.

Upper estimate assumes favourable Primal Fire AH prices. Check your server economy before committing to a session.

Hand of Gul’dan vs The Fel Pits

Both locations in Shadowmoon Valley offer Primal Fire farming at ground level. The key difference:

  • Hand of Gul’dan — dedicated Primal Fire only, wider mob spacing, cleaner isolated pulls, slightly higher Fire drop rate
  • The Fel Pits — dual Primal Fire and Earth simultaneously, higher mob density, more complex routing

If Primal Fire significantly outperforms Primal Earth on your server, Hand of Gul’dan is the stronger focused choice. If both elements are competitive in price, The Fel Pits offers better combined value per session.

Grinding Tips

  • Interrupt Fel Fireball immediately on every pull
  • Burst Fire Spirits down quickly once they Enrage — do not let the Enrage run long
  • Wide mob spacing rewards a large circular route rather than a tight cluster loop
  • Avoid standing on lava — damage zones exist around the volcanic formation
  • Low to medium competition makes this a reliable off-peak alternative when The Fel Pits is contested

Verdict

Hand of Gul’dan delivers an estimated 65,000 – 80,000 XP/hour and 70 – 95g/hour driven entirely by Mote of Fire income. The wide open layout and clean isolated pulls make it one of the most straightforward Primal Fire spots in Shadowmoon Valley — lower density than The Fel Pits but easier to manage solo and with strong Fire drop rates. Remains fully relevant at max level as a dedicated Primal Fire source whenever the AH price justifies a session.
