About This Location
Coilskar Cistern sits north of the Altar of Damnation in Shadowmoon Valley, where the Illidari Naga have taken control of the only clean water supply in the zone. Enraged Water Spirits wander the pockets of agitated water surrounding the Naga camp, with the largest concentration found near the Cistern itself.
The most efficient approach is to focus on the three main pools in the upper area, avoiding unnecessary combat with local Naga who do not drop significant loot. The pool layout allows a clean circular route between the three main water elemental clusters without pulling surrounding Naga mobs.
Mobs
- Enraged Water Spirit — primary target at Coilfang Cistern. Water elemental, level 68-69. Casts Stormbolt — inflicting Frost damage and reducing movement speed for 4 seconds. Interrupt Stormbolt when possible to maintain kill speed and avoid the movement slow stacking up during multi-mob pulls.
- Coilskar Naga — surrounding mob type in the area. Not a primary target — Naga in this area do not drop significant loot and should be avoided where possible by sticking to the upper pool clusters. Pull carefully around patrol routes to minimise accidental Naga aggro during elemental farming.
Mob characteristics: water elemental type, level 68–69, medium HP pool. Spread across defined pool locations rather than a compact camp — routing between pools is the key efficiency factor at this spot.
Estimated XP per Hour
- Estimated XP/hour: 60,000 – 75,000
- Based on approximately 535 XP per mob at level 68-69
- Realistic solo kill rate: approximately 1.8 mobs per minute due to pool spacing
- No rested XP, AoE pulls, or group modifiers included
XP/hour sits at the lower end for Shadowmoon Valley spots due to the spread of Water Spirits across separate pool locations rather than a dense compact camp. The trade-off is consistent Mote of Water income and low competition — this spot is significantly less contested than Fire and Earth farming locations in the zone.
Estimated Gold per Hour
Gold income at Coilfang Cistern comes primarily from:
- Motes of Water — approximately 25% drop rate per Enraged Water Spirit kill
- Vendor trash — minimal elemental drops beyond Motes
- Occasional green item drops
Estimated gold/hour: 55 – 75g. Primal Water sits in the mid-tier value range on most servers — steady crafting demand from Tailoring and Alchemy keeps it consistent throughout the expansion without the dramatic price spikes of Primal Air or Fire. Check your server AH before committing to a session as values vary more than other Primals.

Grinding Tips
- Stick to the three upper pool clusters to avoid accidental Naga aggro
- Interrupt Stormbolt on every pull to prevent the movement slow stacking
- Run a clockwise circular route between the three main pools for consistent respawn management
- Patrolling Coilskar elites can chain-aggro during pool clears — be aware of patrol timings and reset positioning if needed
- Low competition makes this a reliable uncontested spot — one of the quieter farming locations in Shadowmoon Valley
Verdict
Coilfang Cistern delivers an estimated 60,000 – 75,000 XP/hour and 55 – 75g/hour through consistent Mote of Water drops. It is the lowest XP spot among the Shadowmoon Valley grinding locations but compensates with very low competition and reliable Primal Water income. A solid choice for players who have completed Fire and Earth farming goals and want to round out their Primal stockpile before hitting max level.
